We cannot stand still. We need to take action and help relieve the suffering of a particularly impacted group in caste-divided Southeast Asia: the Dalit journalists. These professionals, belonging to lower social classes, fight everyday against caste-based discrimination and violence, and put their own lives at risk.
Dalit and pro-Dalit journalists are in the front line to document and narrate recurring stories of hate, discrimination, and social injustice, which they often see and experience in first person. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation: lower social groups are greatly impacted by the crisis due to the impossibility of practicing physical distancing, following strict hygienic measures, and accessing fundamental services such as healthcare. This has led to even greater financial and healthcare disparities, discrimination, violence, and stigmatization.
It is important that these dramatic realities are reported and exposed because spreading information is crucial in the fight against bigotry, discrimination and violence. However, Dalit journalists cannot do their job in a safe manner. The pandemic has worsened their lives and working conditions, exposing them to greater financial hardship and to extreme health and safety risks. We need your help to support them and defend social justice and freedom of speech.

Support Dalit Journalists defend justice, equality and freedom of speech!

We need your support to protect the lives of Dalit Journalists in Asia, and to defend justice, equality and rights. Please take a moment to give whatever you can afford; any amount is important and will be greatly appreciated! 2020 has been a tough year. The COVID-19 pandemic has been disruptive and has struck a hard blow at everybody’s life. However, underprivileged and marginalized groups around the world have suffered the heaviest consequences.

Did you know that the overwhelming majority of Southeast Asian mainstream media is led and occupied by professionals from dominant castes? According to research, over 75% of anchors and writers in mainstream media belong to dominant castes, just like 100% of professionals holding leadership positions in Hindi news. It comes as no surprise that caste-based discrimination and violence do not receive accurate and critical media coverage. Acts of violence are often sensationalized, but no deep discussion and analysis on the roots of this problematic ever take place in the media. This is why the work of Dalit journalists is so important to help eradicate the illegal caste-mentality and stratification from Southeast Asian societies once and for all. Our aim is to provide Dalit journalists with practical and financial support so that they can continue doing their job in a safe manner and live a decent life together with their families. To accomplish this, we need your generous contributions!
